60TH ANNUAL MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL 2023 – EVENTS SCHEDULE
Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School - 'Ohi'a lehua

Aloha e nā ʻOhana!

A reminder that there is no school from Wednesday, 4/12/2023, to Friday, 4/14/2023.

We highly encourage you to enjoy the many events, crafts, and learning opportunities this week for the 60th Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo.  Most are free and open to the public.  It is a time to celebrate as well as appreciate our Hawaiian culture and arts, support local businesses, and honor King David Kalākaua, who was known as “The Merrie Monarch” and responsible for restoring Hula and the Hawaiian identity.

We will see you back on campus on Monday, 4/17/2023.

“E ola mau ka hula!” – “Long live hula…the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people!”

🌋Papa ‘Elima (5th) and Papa ‘Eono (6th) had their final huaka’i to reconnect with the ‘āina last week. They met with 2 park rangers, Ranger Glen & Ranger June, who took our haumāna on a guided tour from the visitors center, through the Sulphur bank to the steam vents. They also went to Uekahuna, near Jagger museum to do oli & give ho’okupu (offering). They were greeted by the Koa’e Kea, a native manu who reside on the cliffs of Uekahuna. It was such an amazing hō’ailona (sign). They ended their huaka’i with a bird-watching hike at Kipuka Puaulu, also led by the rangers, who brought binoculars for everyone to enjoy.
