When Are Governing Board Meetings Held?

Our School Governing Board meets on the third Thursday of each month in the main office of the school campus at 2:30 PM Meeting dates and times are subject to change. If a meeting date and/or time is changed it will be reflected on the Governing Board Meeting Agenda posted in the main office and on the school’s website at Governing Board Agendas & Minutes.  Laptops may be brought to view documents online. Public comments are limited to items on the meeting agenda, and the general public is encouraged to submit proposals.*

During meetings, authors of proposals are allotted time to present their proposal and answer questions. All meeting materials will be made electronic whenever possible, and accessible at any time by posting said materials to the Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School website (https://nawaiolapcs.org/governingboard/agendas-minutes/). Governing Board Members may request materials after the agenda has been distributed, which occurs six days prior to the Governing Board meeting date.

*Public proposals: to receive assistance with submitting a proposal, or for general questions, please contact the Governing Board Chair via email:  gbchair@nawaiolapcs.org.

The Governing Board is required to make their minutes available within thirty days on the boards or charter school’s website, as well as the SPCSC’s office during regular business hours. A list of Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School’s Governing Board agendas and minutes can be found here.

Who Serves on the Governing Board?

With the exception of conversion charter schools that are run by a non-profit organization, almost anyone is allowed to serve on a charter school Governing Board, although consideration is required for persons who:

  1. Provide the Governing Board with a diversity of perspective and a level of objectivity that accurately represent the interests of the charter school students and the surrounding community;
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of best practices of non-profit governance; and
  3. Possess strong financial and academic management and oversight abilities, as well as human resource and fundraising experience.

In addition, there are a couple of restrictions to the constitution of governing boards:

  • No more than one-third of the members of the Governing Board can be employees or relatives of employees of the charter school under the jurisdiction of that Governing Board.
  • No employee or relative of an employee of a charter school may serve as the chair of the Governing Board of that charter school unless the State Public Charter School Commission grants an exemption based upon a determination that it is in the best interest of the charter school.

Governing boards are required to maintain a list of the current names and contact information of the Governing Board’s members and officers on the board or charter school’s website and in the board’s and SPCSC’s office during regular business hours.

Aloha e nā ʻohana o Nā Wai Ola,We are proud to share exciting and historic news for our school community.Today, May 28, 2026, the Hawaiʻi State Public Charter School Commission met and unanimously approved Nā Wai Ola Public Charter School’s expansion to serve grades Kindergarten through 12.This milestone means that Nā Wai Ola will grow into a full K–12 learning institution through a thoughtful, phased approach:Grade 9: School Year 2026–2027Grade 10: School Year 2027–2028Grade 11: School Year 2028–2029Grade 12: School Year 2029–2030The Commission recognized our newly designed Project-Based Learning (PBL) educational program as both robust and rigorous, noting its strong alignment with our mission, vision, and commitment to Hawaiian culture-based education. This affirmation reflects the deep and intentional work of our kumu and staff in designing meaningful, engaging, and academically challenging learning experiences for our haumāna.We are especially excited about the work already underway to prepare for this next phase. Our educational team is actively building and refining our schoolwide PBL program to ensure it enhances student learning, strengthens outcomes, and reflects who we are as a school community.In addition, we have begun coordination with our partners at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education, including the Complex Area Superintendent, as well as leadership from Keaʻau High School and the Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF). Through these collaborations, we are working to ensure that our future high school students will have access to athletics and extracurricular opportunities through Keaʻau High School.This achievement reflects the collective commitment, dedication, and belief of our entire community—our haumāna, ʻohana, kumu, staff, and board. It is a direct result of our shared vision to provide a high-quality, culturally grounded education rooted in ʻike Hawaiʻi and delivered through a dynamic PBL approach.This success belongs to all of us.As we move forward, we remain committed to working collaboratively to ensure that every student is supported, challenged, and inspired—now and into the future.Mahalo nui loa for your continued trust, support, and partnership.Interested in enrollment for school year 2026-2027?
