About Our Project-Based Learning Program

Our Project-Based/Place-Based Learning (PBL) program integrates both Hawaiian cultural knowledge, understanding, and practices with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or modern knowledge, understanding, and practices to produce unique, practical, and culturally relevant projects that directly impact our communities in a positive way.  With the support of our academic curriculum that integrates both Hawaiian and Western knowledge and practices, students learn how to apply their educational understanding and skills to their projects, with the intention of presenting new ideas in a practical way to help themselves, their families, and communities live healthy and prosperous lives.

Culture-Based

Culture-based projects include the observation, experimentation, and replication of traditional stories and beliefs, while further researching and understanding traditional knowledge and practices.  These projects focus on the importance of spiritual, social, and environmental relationships with the world and one another.

Science-Based

Science-based projects include understanding and implementing scientific knowledge and practices, such as the scientific method, to research and discover more about how humans impact the world.

Student-Driven

The most appealing aspect of our PBL program is that it is based on student-centered learning and inquiry.  This means that students use what they already know to help resolve some adversities that they see as prevalent in their communities through their projects.  Students lead the discussions and create the ideas that begin the process for their projects.  This PBL program allows students to be valued for what they bring to the classroom and their communities.  It also motivates students to continue being lifelong learners as they apply what they learn in the classroom to a practical project for their communities, hence fulfilling our mission and vision.
